FREEPORT — Celebrate the talented young artists from the schools of Freeport and surrounding communities by visiting the annual Aspiring Artists: A Student Exhibition, opening Friday, April 12 and running though May 25, 2013 at the Freeport Art Museum.

FREEPORT — Big Brothers Big Sisters of Northwest Illinois, a program of FHN Family Counseling Center, has been awarded a $10,000 grant from the Comcast Foundation to support its mentoring program.

Big Brothers Big Sisters is a national mentoring program which has been in existence in Stephenson and Jo Daviess counties for more than 40 years. This program provides one-to-one mentoring to youth ages 6-16 in both the site-based or community-based setting.

“Generous donations from Comcast and others give us the ability to provide vital services to the children and families we serve in our community,” said Beth Johnson, prevention and education supervisor at FHN Family Counseling Center.

The grant from the Comcast Foundation is in recognition of Comcast’s commitment to the communities where its customers and employees live and work. Since its founding in 1999, the Comcast Foundation has distributed more than $90 million in cash support of programs implemented locally in Comcast communities.

“Comcast congratulates Big Brothers Big Sisters and is pleased to support the organization in its efforts to improve the lives of children and families in Stephenson County,” said Charisse R. Lillie, Comcast Foundation president.

FROM FHN:

FREEPORT — Here are some news and updates from FHN, in Freeport.

FHN Introduces New Billing Statements

For the convenience of our patients, FHN now offers easier-to-read billing statements, e-statements, and an online bill payment option.

The new billing statements feature:

· Clear, consistent formats for both hospital and physician statements

· A patient-friendly summary page

· Online bill payment options with a smart phone scanner QRL

To help patients understand the new billing format, there is a “how to read your statement” guide on the back of each statement.

Patients may also opt to bring their accounts fully online with e-billing, which eliminates paper statements in favor of electronic statements and electronic account records.

The new billing statements include an account-specific code that will allow patients to make online payments at www.fhn.org. (Click on the “Pay Your Bill Online” icon on the upper right side of the page.) Online payments may be made with debit or credit cards.

Two options are available for paying a bill online:

Pay without enrolling – This quick payment option is useful for a one-time payment of the entire account balance. This option does not provide access to payment history, and it does not give the option to review accounts or statements online.

Create an online account – This option allows access to payment history data and ability to download and/or print a statement.

FHN Dedicates Scholarships

Highland Community College has many long-standing partnerships within northwest Illinois, allowing Highland to continually look towards the future. It is in this spirit that FHN donated a $15,000 Highland scholarship to the first baby born on or after the momentous date of Sept. 6, 2012, 50 years to the day that classes were first held at then-named Freeport Community College.

Future HCC student Traceshiona Parsons was born at 5:21 a.m. on Thursday, September 6, at FHN Memorial Hospital. The proud parents, looking refreshed after giving birth to a “college student,” are Tabatha Parsons and Earnest Denson of Freeport.

“I am so happy to have this opportunity for Traceshiona,” said Ms. Parsons. “It will definitely help her have a better life. I will tell her to aim high and use this education to make a difference in her world, maybe in business or politics.”

The family is honored to be chosen for this one-of-a-kind scholarship, especially given that it was a complete surprise. And while college students are usually made not born, in this case, the unlimited possibilities a solid educational foundation can provide for Traceshiona are obvious.

“Based on conservative estimates, the scholarship amount will likely double by 2030 when Traceshiona attends classes,” said Jim Berberet, executive director for the Highland Community College Foundation. “Taking that into consideration, Traceshiona should have the majority of necessary financial support to use towards tuition, fees and other learning materials.”

FHN President and CEO Mike Perry, MD presented a basket of baby goodies and the news of the scholarship to Ms. Parsons with congratulations from the entire staff of FHN. “We are delighted to be able to celebrate our longstanding partnership with Highland Community College by providing for Traceshiona’s education. Our commitment to the community began long before Highland was established, and we’re proud to say that we plan to continue to be here and ready to care for Traceshiona and her family many years from now.”

FHN is a sponsor of the HCC Leadership Institute and a partner in equipping Highland Community College’s Ray and Betty Stamm Health Science Nursing Wing. Dozens of Leadership Institute graduates are staff members at FHN and they and many other staff members play key roles in enriching and improving the health of their communities.

Highland President Joe M. Kanosky, Ph.D., was present to congratulate the family and present a Highland pennant and basket of HCC gear to prepare the future Cougar. “We are very excited to meet our student-to-be and we thank the family and FHN for helping us celebrate our 50th Anniversary,” said Kanosky. “The partnership between FHN and Highland has been enduring. This is a symbol of how we see it moving into the future.”

While HCC is committed to providing a quality affordable education into the next 50 years, overall college costs continue to rise. Tabatha and Earnest will breathe a little easier when it comes to planning Traceshiona’s education. Instead, they can worry about the never-ending feeding and diapering duties of parenting a newborn, and eventually the increased cooking and laundering duties of raising a teenager poised to attend college!
