No longer strictly a religious symbol, the beautiful, all-natural rose beads found on rosary strands also fit on keepsake necklaces, bracelets, earrings and rings. The black beads are handmade from fermented roses, using a process learned from nuns in Chicago, and practiced by a Rockford pastor for nearly 40 years.

Beloit Janesville Symphony offers several free performances throughout its season, such as the patriotic pops concert in Janesville’s Courthouse Park on July 3, pictured above. Led by Maestro Rob Tomaro, the orchestra played his original work, “The Mindset Suite: The Things We Hold Dear.” The piece was put together by Tomaro to accompany narration by Beloit College professors Ron Nief and Tom McBride (standing, lower left), based on the pair’s book, The Mindset Lists of American History, which examines times of conflict in the U.S. through the eyes of an 18-year-old of each era.
