RSO Crowns Concerto Competition Winners

ROCKFORD – The Rockford Symphony Orchestra and Rock Valley College announce the 2012 Concerto Competition winners. The annual event offered music students aged 13-21 the opportunity to compete for three cash awards and a featured performance with the Rockford Symphony Youth Orchestra (RSYO) in its spring 2012 concert.

First Prize ($300) was awarded to Joanna Nerius, violin from Cherry Valley, Ill.. She performed the third movement of the Violin Concerto in E minor, op. 64 by Felix Mendelssohn. Joanna studies with Rachel Handlin, assistant concertmaster for the RSO. She is a freshman at Rock Valley College and performed at the Grand Canyon in the summer of 2011 with the Rockford Music Academy’s Measure Five ensemble. Joanna will perform with the RSYO on their April 29, 2012 performance in the Coronado Performing Arts Center.

Second Prize ($250) was awarded to Paul Milius, trumpet from Rockford. He performed the Trumpet Concerto in A flat major by Alexander Arutunian. Paul studies with Mark Baldin, principal trumpet for the RSO. He is a senior at Auburn High School and is first chair trumpet in the Rockford Symphony Youth Orchestra.

Third Prize ($150) was awarded to Thomas Wu, clarinet from Roscoe, Ill. Thomas performed the Concertino in B flat by Carl M. Von Weber. Thomas studies with Don Larson. He is second chair clarinet in the Rockford Symphony Youth Orchestra and is a freshman at Hononegah High School.
