FHN Closing Skilled Nursing Unit

By

FREEPORT, Ill. — FHN has submitted an application to close the Skilled Nursing Unit (SNU) at FHN Memorial Hospital. Approval is expected this fall from the Illinois Health Facilities Planning Board.

“As one of the last hospitals in the state with a SNU, we are proud of the care our providers and staff have provided to patients there over the years, even as demand has declined,” said Sharon Summers, FHN Executive Vice President and Chief Operating Officer. “However, we are very comfortable that our good partners in nursing homes throughout the region, for whom long-term/residential care is a primary focus, have enough capacity to provide SNU services for any of our acute care patients who require this type of care when they leave our hospital.”

She added that FHN has had a process in place for some time where FHN nurse practitioners visit patients in area nursing homes to ensure ongoing support during their recuperation.

Summers went on to say that in addition to declining demand, decreasing reimbursements environment from Medicare and other insurance carriers contributed to this decision, as well as the fact that longer-term care is not a part of FHN’s core mission. “Cost-savings realized from this action will allow us to meet escalating costs in our core healthcare services arising from national and state-wide challenges such as dramatically rising medical malpractice insurance and ongoing reductions in Medicare and other state reimbursements,” said Summers.

FHN plans to re-deploy or otherwise address the employment of SNU employees through its standard policy for such situations.
