Need help with sinus issues? Sinus issues impact nearly 37 million Americans each year. Whether it is acute (going away in less than four weeks), subacute (4-8 weeks) or chronic (going on eight or more weeks), all three have similar symptoms. It’s a good idea to get to the root of your sinus issues. Is your condition caused by allergies, mucus buildup or dry nose?
Acute sinusitis is very common, and about 90 percent of adults have had sinusitis at some point in their lives. It can be either bacterial or viral. Chronic sinusitis may cause facial pain, headache, coughing, dizziness and other unpleasant symptoms.
You may want to look at your home environment for help. Cooler temperatures are better than hot, dry air. Place a humidifier in your bedroom for relief in the winter. If the outdoor temperature is right, open your house for some fresh air. Also be sure to drink plenty of fluids to keep your membranes moist.
Conservative treatment may also help. You could try a nasal irrigation (with a salt water mix) or decongestant nasal sprays containing oxymetazoline (do not use longer than the recommended period). The majority of sinusitis cases are caused by viruses and will therefore resolve without antibiotics However, if symptoms do not resolve within 10 days, an antibiotic may be prescribed.
Surgery may be considered for those patients who do not experience sufficient relief from optimal medications. There are a number of new surgeries that can target the affected sinuses, reducing tissue damage and providing relief.
